I was thinking recently about bitterness. If you go back in my podcast library, I’ve made mention of the fact on a few occasions, that I did not want to be bitter over how my life turned out. I know me, and I knew how dangerous bitter could be.
I knew It would be normal to have valley moments and mountain top moments; and that sometimes my emotions would try to get the best of me.
But I did not want to be bitter. At least not for any extended amount of time.
I knew where bitter could take me: to sad, lonely places in my head and in my heart. And I didn’t want to go there. At least, I didn’t want to stay there. Not for an extended amount of time.
It is quite healthy, and better, to recognize the feelings and emotions that show up, instead of trying to squash those feelings. But it is quite a different thing to allow those feelings to have power over us. Especially feelings like bitterness. At least for an extended amount of time.
You see, bitterness is an emotion just like any other. But it is not the kind of emotion in which we want to remain. At least not for any extended amount of time.
I believe bitterness should be transitional because staying there can cause us to come to a standstill in every aspect of our lives. We can miss out on quite a bit when at a standstill. So be there for a moment, but don’t stay there.
At least not for any extended amount of time.

Thank you very much for this article! It is good to just realize that bitterness doesn’t have to rule my life, but that I could still acknowledge it and feel it temporarily.
